Macalma: Let Us Join Senator Hirono’s Battle
Washington, D.C.–Following news that Senator Mazie Hirono (D, HI) is undergoing kidney cancer treatment, Eric Macalma, Region 2 Chair of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), as well as a member of the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project (FilVetREP) Executive Board, issued the following statement today:
“I urge our community to join us at NaFFAA and FilVetREP in expressing our hopes and prayers for the swift and full recovery of U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono. Over the years, Senator Hirono has been our champion in winning so many battles. Even today, her dedication in fighting for recognition and benefits for Filipino and Filipino American World War II veterans remains constant.
“I ask the community across the country–individuals, families and organizations–to join us in supporting Senator Hirono’s personal battle. It is hoped that she and her family will find further strength in our collective positive intentions. Let us reach out with statements of our expressions of support and prayers to her by emailing her Senate office: www.senate.gov/senators/contact.
Senator Hirono was the original co-sponsor of the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act. The bill, signed into law by President Obama in December 2016, grants official recognition to over 260,000 Filipinos who fought side by side with Americans in the name of peace and freedom. Likewise, Senator Hirono’s sterling dedication resulted in the reunification of our veterans here with their families in the Philippines.
